Earlier this year, I sent out a survey to MS4s who applied into #Pediatrics to help set expectations for future applicants of what the application season looks like! 98 people responded. While the dates are no longer applicable, I wanted to share! #PedsMatch21 @FuturePedsRes(1/9)
Some applicants received interview invites the same day as ERAS submissions, and the majority of applicants received their 1st invite within 5 days. A word of advice about scheduling interviews: Consider making a separate email account for ERAS so you don’t miss any invites (2/9)
The majority of respondents’ first interviews happened about one month after ERAS submission. The majority of last interviews occurred in mid to late January. Most respondents attended 10-14 interviews. #PedsMatch21 (3/9)
This year the @APPDconnect is recommending we #ApplySmart, so numbers will probably look a little different for us. Learn more about the campaign here: http://shorturl.at/kyP17
Thanks @FuturePedsRes! (4/9)
Tips for interviewing: “The hobbies section of ERAS is where the majority of interview questions came from.” Be prepared with questions to ask them – “How does your program promote resident autonomy?” “What might residents not get enough exposure to here?” etc. (5/9)
Most common interview questions: “Tell me about yourself” (tip: have an elevator pitch ready); “Why pediatrics?” “Why this program?” “Tell me about a time you struggled or ‘failed.’” (6/9)
Unexpected Qs: “If you could change anything you have done in your life, what would it be?” “What is the best piece of feedback you ever received?” “Can you present a recent patient to me?” “How would your best friend describe you & how would your worst enemy describe you?” (7/9)
Tips for making a rank list: Keep a running list during interview season and rank as you go. Try not to consult too many people, but call someone you trust right after each interview so they can help you reflect on how you felt later on. (8/9)
