I've often heard that each country/culture has some foods that if you don't taste for the first time as a child, they taste vile as an adult. Like natto for Japan, Vegemite for Australians, and root beer for Americans.
I've come to like all of these, but I admit my first taste of natto and vegemite was repulsive. I had to overcome that to get to enjoy them. And I've SEEN Japanese people take their first drink of root beer. Miyuki spit it right out onto the ground and wanted to wash her tongue.
The one that completely defeated me in every way was Irn Bru. I tried. Oh, I TRIED! But that mix of bubblegum and orange fizzy drink was too much for me. Blech.
For root beer, Miyuki and I were in Okinawa and saw an A&W root beer place. I got excited because I hadn't had root beer for years, and she had never heard of it. I happily chugged mine down while her's wound up on the sidewalk...
