For our final session of #NWAS20, we have Severe II! Opening up our final session is Dr. Danielle Nagele, Senior Project Advisor for the @NWS #HazSimp project! #NWAS20
Nagele: Let's quickly define our three main terms. #NWAS20
Nagele: The main motivation is anecdotal evidence of confusion with our products. There is perceived hierarchical severity, advisory is just misunderstood completely, and we have a Periodic Table of the WWA (too many products/colors). #NWAS20
Nagele: Through about 6 years of social science research, we confirmed there is confusion. Only 14% of the time, people correctly identified their definitions/meaning. No perfect words and there are issues with colors too. #NWAS20
Nagele: Our proposal: Match the "Prepare" or "Act" paradigm. #NWAS20
Nagele: We would "raise the flag" for the big events...watch and warning. We would just package advisory wording in a different way, using plain language headlines. #NWAS20
Nagele: So would it just be advisories? No, we are also proposing SPS and NOW products as well. These would all be in the new plain language format. #NWAS20
Nagele: Here's an example of a new "advisory" and "SPS". In the case of the SPS, the format would change to be more consistent with other bulleted formats in our products. #NWAS20
Nagele: The toughest part...how do you communicate plain language? Here are some potential examples and our current NWS advisories.

We don't want to re-introduce confusion.

#NWAS20
Nagele: In the past 6-8 months, we've done a lot of socialization and feedback sessions. By November 2020, our final recommendation will be given to NWS leadership. #NWAS20
