Something has confused me about a lot of the replies in this thread. There’s many people talking about how this man is privileged because of his skin color, and I wholeheartedly agree with that. My problem is that people seem to be angry that this man wasn’t shot and met with https://twitter.com/dijoni/status/1306060254497497088
lethal force. A lot of BLM is supposed to be about police reform and making it so that police aren’t killing people. This guy was handling a gun and so one can easily say it was justified for them to shoot this man. But that shouldn’t be our expectation, should it? We should want
the police to do everything they can to not use lethal force when trying to detain someone. Yet I see people in the comments saying these cops deserved their fate (which is disgusting), and that they should’ve shot this guy. When you say all cops are bad, but then watch these two
and see how they tried as hard as they could to non-lethally detain this man, it’s hard to say that these cops are. Being a “good” cop (at least in this altercation) lost one man his life.
Disclaimer: I understand the original post was meant to highlight how white privilege plays out in the media, and completely agree with that. I mostly had problems with the recurring theme I see in threads where it seems that people want white people to be met with lethal force
when they don’t comply. I think every alternative should be taken before lethal force, in every altercation black and white. I also understand that people’s comments on cops deserving to die may come from a place of frustration, but fighting hate with hate just isn’t the way.
We also don’t know how these cops would handle a black man in this situation, so this very well could play out as a situation of white privilege in terms of police interaction, but we shouldn’t automatically assume that. If ending police brutality is one of the goals of the BLM
movement, that should apply to every individual. End thread.
