Sometimes I think about all the queer kids growing up in conservative churches AS WE SPEAK — the trans kids being taught what their gender presentation must be, the lesbians being taught they must marry men and be at their sexual beck-and-call — and it unravels me.
At this very moment, there’s a bisexual girl in a Bible class somewhere out in the world who’s being told she only has one option for love. Right now, there’s a femme gay boy at a youth group being told he must be more “manly” and “strong” to impress girls he’s not interested in.
They go back to their homes at night where they might pray with family members, read their Bibles, do their devotionals or Bible class homework. And one day they’ll have to confront their truth. One day, to no fault of their own, they’ll be presented with choices. Hard choices.
Hopefully, it’s before they marry the wrong gender. Hopefully, it’s before they get so far stuck in the insular microcosm that is evangelical Christianity that their entire livelihood — financially, physically, socially, mentally — depends on towing the line. But it might not be.
