Compton & Bridges writing brings up an excellent point in stating that there are limits to what celebration can do. A rise in promotion for Pride month through advertising and promotional techniques for companies does not lessen the amount of discrimination trans people may see
Seeing trans actors on television or in movies may represent them and help people who live rurally or have not met trans individuals understand them more by educating them, but this does not create legislation aimed at preventing discrimination against trans people.
Black trans women are statistically more likely to suffer from domestic violence and have a lower life span than other people, so I can’t help but think that more awareness or representation would help lessen this, since they are vastly underrepresented in media in many cases
Granted this kind of violence stems from bigotry as well as lots of other things, I feel as though if we had a more common understand of trans people and their experience, then hate crimes like this may not be so common.
