Passed by Birmingham’s Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries today and had a wander. Been a long time. Fascinating place with some wartime connections. Here is a thread I hope will be of interest. VC’s, catacombs and more.
A VC. His plaque all but hidden and easily missed. On rear aspect of Warstone Lanes Cemetery Lodge. More.
Great War memorial. Men buried in cemetery but no headstone are listed on wall. No burial pit either. Unusual for U.K. cemetery?
Victorian Catacombs. Once this cemetery was run by a private company before BCC took over. Extensive renovations going on now. Nice to see. The richest had a space here and connected to rail siding by a tunnel. More.
Worthy of research. Interesting story no doubt. Capt Charles Leslie Young. D.S.C. Mercilessly shot at by the Germans. More.
Boer War casualty commemorated. More.
Then my highlight. Came across the small decaying but not forgotten Gill burial plot. A family VC. Buried Delville Wood Cemetery but mentioned here. Easily missed but for poppy. Image if grave in France from net.
Interesting afternoon.
Forgot to add. First recorded burial was in 1837 or thereabouts. Taken over by BCC in 1920’s. After 1945 BCC ran out of money and laid many headstones flat and grassed them over for maintenance. Also demolished the Cemetery Chapels for the mourners.
