Hearing babies get to learn ASL. Deaf babies get hearing devices, and then have a video going viral of them hearing for the first time as inspiration porn

Those videos are never captioned. So it’s not even accessible to the Deaf community

First thing Doctors say when they find out a child is Deaf, “I’m sorry, your child is deaf” and immediately talk about hearing aids and cochlear implant options. Never about ASL, Deaf schools, Deaf Culture. Etc etc

And it’s a slap in the face when your hearing friends and family send you these kind of videos every time.

Also, those videos send the message that hearing devices work. False. It doesn’t work for every Deaf person. It doesn’t magically make you hearing again. It doesn’t show the struggle and pain of amplified sounds banging in your eardrums 24/7

At least let the kid grow to where they can make their own decision regarding getting hearing devices. We are not broken.

I feel like for hearing parents, it is more for their comfort to get their Deaf child hearing devices than it is for the Deaf child. All y’all know is hearing. You can’t imagine what it’s like to be Deaf. That’s a personal problem. Deaf children can thrive just the way they are.
