#Bills K Tyler Bass appeared to make his first field goal attempt on Sunday, but it was called no good.

Here it is in slow motion.

Let’s talk about this.
The NFL rulebook says kicks that go over the upright get all the way to the farthest edge of the goal post. It’s hard to say exactly where this one crossed, but even if it was over the top of the bar it should’ve been good.
Even though this was a scoring play, Sean McDermott was told it wasn’t reviewable. The rulebook says FGs in general are reviewable, but only if the ball is between the bars.

This of course makes no sense in 2020, when additional cameras or technology could easily answer this.
Now, you might think the end zone view on the All-22 coaches film could help with this.

That’s a great thought! Except ... this play is conviently missing from the All-22.

It goes from third down to two shots of Bass’ fourth-quarter make, then back to the third quarter 🧐
This call ultimately didn’t affect the outcome, but it did the change the game. The Jets went down and scored three plays later. Suddenly it was 21-10 instead of 24-3.

The Bills still covered the spread and the over still hit, but missing scoring plays absolutely cannot happen.
You can decide for yourself if you think the omission of a controversial call was intentional or accidental. The All-22 was comically late this week (Thursday morning? You serious Clark?) so maybe they had some issues on the back end.
Anyway ... the point is we can absolutely do better than this. Look at what other leagues are doing with technology. Baseball tracks the spin on pitches. Golf tracks every shot off the tee.

The NFL relies on an older man craning his neck to see a ball 100 feet above his head.
One addendum: I know the average fan maybe hasn’t wrapped their head around the gambling aspect of football yet, but that is a major deal. As the league embraces gambling, any mistake on scoring plays could open the NFL up to lawsuits. I know it’s unlikely, but the risk is real.
And even if an error doesn’t affect “the spread” as it’s commonly thought of, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. Different books offer different odds. Lines move. And you can always bet an alternate spread or total. Any error has the potential to create issues.
