One strange thing about the China debate in America is that many people seem to think China is actually communist, as in redistributive and egalitarian, because it is run by a party with the word "Communist" in its name. 1/
This leads the U.S. right to denounce "Communist China" in Cold War terms. And now parts of the U.S. left are backing China (and denying what is happening in Xinjiang) on anti-imperial grounds—when, in reality, China is in many ways an authoritarian, settler-colonial power... 2/
