So I’m glad the B1G & P12 are going to *try* to play. The players deserve a chance & whatever keeps people from losing jobs is a positive. But I just don’t get the “the B1G finally got it right!” and “other leagues proved it can work” narratives...
Texas Tech and LSU have essentially reached herd immunity because of so many positive cases. Dozens of schools are canceling and postponing games. Ga Southern played down 31 guys last week. The crowds at games are ignoring rules & earning scorn from local governments...
This hasn’t been “proof” that CFB can work. It’s proof that we can keep moving forward despite all the things everyone said could happen actually happening. And we’re only 2 weeks in with half the P5 yet to play a game!
Did the B1G “finally get it right”? That really remains to be seen. There’s zero wiggle room in their schedule with some tough requirements for play. This could easily turn into a disaster, too.
If in the end, “right” is determined as “a season when no one died” then yeah I suppose there’s still decent odds CFB gets it right. But literally everything else people were worried would happen is pretty much happening and we’re all applauding the success of this approach.
Again, I’m thrilled there’s football because people work really hard and deserve a shot to play if at all possible. But man, it sure feels like we’ve all just decided we’re on the other side of this now and… I don’t see it. We’re just agreeing to endure the problems.
And even as we’re applauding the new testing as a “game changer” we’ve got a Charlotte player and a Pitt player saying false positives are keeping them out. And that’s setting aside the obvious moral questions about who should be getting access to cheap, fast tests first.
I mean, I know if you’re not cheerleading all of this as a great success story then you must be rooting for the virus… but I just think we need to be a little more considered in how we’re evaluating what exactly success means here.
