A quick update on Decades, for those interested in how one highly affected small business is doing in this mess. A short thread...
Revenues have moved up a little, but still like 28% of normal. That's despite takeout and new big outdoor space. People are bowling some, but we can only have half our lanes open. Maximum party size is 25, which rules out big corporate events that are very important.
A lot of critics of business relief have said that businesses should have saved and planned. Well, we did. Our profit and revenues for our first full year were both within about 2% to 3% of our business plan projections. If you know small business revenue projections, that's nuts
And we waited until close to the end of our first fiscal year in January to decide what to do with all of our profits. Because the pandemic was a threat, we decided to just pay down all short-term debt and save the rest of the cash.
So we came into this pretty cautious and prepared. And yet despite PPP and also a $50k grant from the state, we ran out of cash this month and have begun injecting cash into the business. Losing money every month still.
PPP and other relief helped a lot of businesses like ours cruise on fumes for a little, but that cash is gone. I think a lot of businesses are going to be in the same position. And it's real pain from here on out.
We took all the precautions we could bc we saw the risk in January. And we are still dealing w/ the virus bc the government had less foresight and planning than we did. Businesses are not failing bc of their own irresponsibility, but bc of the govt's mismanagement of this crisis
