This is probably corny as fuck, but the idea that you can only hold ideas in your head that you have language for has really stuck with me since reading Orwell, as a result I’m always alert to people intentionally shifting the definitions of things for nefarious purposes.
And also maybe not nefarious purposes. Words and language can evolve but when a whole concept gets deleted in the process, I think that’s dangerous. That’s why I was curious about your personal definition of “bot” the other day. Years ago I noticed that the definition of “troll”
got more or less destroyed with trumps campaign, suddenly 4chan types claimed they “trolled” him into office, smart reporters were interviewing successful trolls on NPR, etc etc. none of those people were trolls.
A troll SPECIFICALLY does not believe in the position they stake.
If the trump presidency was your desired outcome, and you argued or memed online in that direction, you didn’t troll anything. A troll picks a fight from a position they don’t support solely to disrupt discourse. If they actually support that position they’re simply an asshole
This kind of thing happens ALL the time. For other examples see democrats being called “the left”, or more confusingly “liberalism” being referred to as a left position- (it’s not, it’s center-right). One of my favorite mangled definitions though
Is middle class. Middle class is not an income bracket, it’s an income arrangement. If you’re dependent on your labor for your income, you are working class. If your situation is such that no one is empowered to take away your income, you might be middle class.
Tradespersons who own their own business, or freelancers, union labor with protections, etc, middle class.
