A letter from LOTO press Secretary Patricia Hewitt to Dobson in 1987 stated: ‘The “Loony Labour Left” is now taking its toll; the gays and lesbians issue is costing us dear amongst pensioners’.

This isn’t to say that Dobson wasn’t a strong supporter of gay rights in the 90s - as a consistently good voting record in Parliament shows.
But when the Thatcher government was actively legalising homophobia and allowing the AIDS crisis to take thousands of lives, where was he?
My point is - in decades to come, Labour will claim trans rights as our own progressive campaign, when in reality it’s being fought for by people that current MPs would call the ‘loony left’, or possibly, ‘a Communist pile on’.
It’s easy to be in support of vulnerable groups after the fact - far less easy to do so when it’s a toxic ‘debate’, filled with people calling it unnatural, predatory, allegations of perversion abound.

But in the fight for equality, Labour is once again sitting on the sidelines.
Anyway - bravo @The_TUC, bravo to the groups fighting for justice, bravo to those brave enough to speak out when it’s not ‘politically viable’ to do so.

I hope Labour stops letting you all down ASAP!
