Now that theres been appropriate time for people to speak on white favoritism, Lets Have The Big Talk About This Fandoms Overuse of âAbleismâ And how its 1. Harmful 2. Thrown around loosely and 3. Not as woke as yall think it is. In a long, hopefully comprehensible thread <3
I have never in my life been in a fandom that throws around the word ableist like CANDY. It gets to the point Iâm starting to think you guys donât know what ableism IS. Yes, discrimination IS real, yes, micro aggressions ARE real however we have to realize the weight of the word
âAbleistâ and how weâre using it against other people in this fandom, especially OTHER neurodivergent people. While nd people ARE able to be ableist, it is genuinely upsetting how many nd people have been falsely accused and âcancelledâ for misusing language or misunderstandings.
This fandom loves to preach about mental health, using tone indicators, helping out fellow nd ppl but are also the SAME ppl to start a witch hunt when said nd people miss social cues through text. Using yalls loose logic of what ableism is... wouldnt attacking said nd person for
missing that social cue be inherently ableist? Especially to the degree tohtwt goes to âcancelâ people. Ppl in this fandom are genuinely AFRAID of being called out and getting ratioâd and its so sad to see, esp w twt culture and all that itâs understandably overwhelming.
It feels like a back and forth when I see yet another nd person get called out for being âableistâ and them having to protect their acc and apologize while getting called names for small misunderstandings. Be Better guys, stop the arguing and actually help them, you gain nothing
From their suffering. You can be upset about what was said, people handle things differently. Some people are sensitive and some are not, however that doesnât make minor inconveniences âableist.â You can acknowledge that it was ignorant and not start twt drama for no reason.
A point Iâd like to make that I keep bringing up was poc being called ableist for pointing out white favoritism weeks ago. While I do not speak for all nd people, most of the nd ppl Ive talked to have also pointed out that it made no sense and had no correlation. If anything, the
whole stunt was racist, the way they were targeting poc explicitly for stating an issue that was mostly ignored until the popular white accounts came along and mentioned it. I have comfort characters too, who doesnât in this fandom, however me pointing out the clear idolization
Of amity, the blight twins and viney does not make me ableist for âattacking your comfort characterâ Another thing Iâd like to point out was the Dana Terrance incident. While yall do have the right to your feelings and being hurt at what dana said, it was also something that was
Completely blown out of proportion. Dana never outright picked at Luzâs possible adhd, she never poked fun at Luzâs intelligence. Do not make Luzâs entire character and personality only based around her nd traits. Dana called luz âa bit of a boneheadâ in a light hearted, loving
manner towards the character she... you know.. MADE. She didnât make fun of her not picking up social cues, she made it clear Luz is just an oblivious person whoâs currently got too much on her plate. Which is understandable really.
Now let me mention how this use of the term âableistâ being used so freely feels disrespectful... at least to me.
TW: abuse
As someone whoâs dealt with ableism from my own family, friends, the school system in general, this misuse of âableismâ on the smallest things feels so

Wrong. It feels disrespectful to the harsh realities of ableism.
This oneâs gonna be a bit controversial but I genuinely do feel like the reason the use of the word ableism became so popular in this fandom specifically was white nd gays using their only oppression card bc they

Clearly arenât oppressed for their race nor their sexuality considering this is a largely lgbt fanbase. So funnily enough... the topic always seems to fall back to ableism... even though most of the time its two nd people going back and forth abt what is and isnât ableist.
At the end of the day, this new âtrendâ of calling everything ableist is harmful to both parties and spreads misinformation about what ableism is... this seriously makes us look bad. Heres some links i found helpful
