One of the more disturbing things over the past 5 years is watching friends I grew up with descending into the Trump cult. I grew up in a v republican area, in a v republican household. Consequently, I am not surprised that folks wanted to stay republicans/conservative.
I am surprised that they have embraced this man. These friends are not the ‘rednecks and hillbillies’ that get trotted out as Trump supporters. They are middle age, upper-middle-class white folks. These folks do not have ‘economic anxiety’.
I’ve seen folks that I ran from the cops with becoming ardent supporters of police violence. I’ve seen folks that never uttered a racist remark before embrace racist rhetoric. All while claiming to be pro first amendment and non-racist.
I’ve seen folks that never gave a shit about reproductive rights suddenly become pro-life. Yet, they are pro concentration camp and family separation.
I don’t have any answers here. What I have found is that there is no way to engage these folks. There is no more truth for them, only a non-sensical both-sides state of discourse that they love.
The folks that I know will def not accept a Trump loss. And I don& #39;t know what we do about that.
