black women crowned as miss south africa; a thread :
disclaimer: in the history of the miss sa pageant, we have 9 black women who have the miss sa title to their name & because we're celebrating black women, i'm including some of the black women excluded from the pageant due to the apartheid era and the exclusion that came with it.
jacqui mofokeng (1993)

the first black woman to be crowned as miss sa (after the decision for the pageant to be more inclusive and diverse). jacqui became the 1st runner up at miss world 1993.
basetsana kumalo (then makgalemele) (1994).

miss sa 1994, 1st runner up at miss world 1994. she had previously held the title of miss black sa in 1990.
peggy-sue khumalo (1996)

winning the miss sa in 1996, she went on to compete for the miss world title and ended up in the top 10.
here with 1996's miss sa, peggy-sue, is babalwa mneno (far left - 1st runner-up for miss sa 1996). babalwa went on to become one of the biggest models in south africa and having several beauty pageant titles to her name.
joan ramagoshi (madibeng) (2003)

joan won the miss sa title in 2003. after winning the title, she went on to compete for the 2004 miss universe and miss world pageants.
nokuthula sithole (2005)

nokuthula won the miss sa title in 2005 and went on to compete for the miss world and miss universe 2006 but got unplaced. also, look at that face. what a serve.
bokang montjane (2010)

bokang won the miss sa title in 2010. with the title in her name, she went on to compete for the 2011 miss world title and ended up in the top 7. she was unplaced at the miss universe 2011 pageant.
ziphozakhe zokufa (2014)

initially, ziphozakhe won 1st princess at the pageant (rolene strauss won the 2014 miss sa title) but with rolene's win at the 2014 miss world pageant, she took over the title and assumed the duties. what a stunning queen.
ntandoyenkosi kunene (2016)

winning the miss sa title in 2016, she went on to represent the country in the miss world and miss universe pageants.
zozibini tunzi (2019)

zozibini won the miss sa pageant in 2019. winning that title, she went on to represent the country in the miss universe pageant and is currently reigning as miss universe 2019.
in the 60+ years history of the pageant, only 9 black women earned the miss sa title. during the apartheid era, black women were excluded in the official pageant resulting in the creation of miss black south africa. the pageant was/is often sidelined.
miss black sa is not part of the miss sa organisation but we're going to acknowledge some of the queens that couldn't partake in the official miss south africa pageant.
cynthia shange (1972)

miss shange won miss natal in 1972 and went on to compete for miss black south africa the very same year. she won the title making her the very first black beauty queen to win the miss sa title. the win resulted in her representing sa in miss world 1972.
other queens like veronica motsepe and evelyn williams and many others are beauty queens who got sidelined as a result of the prejudice they faced in some of the pageants during the apartheid regime.
