How are local centres in Greater #Manchester recovering from lockdown?

City centres are currently empty because they have more offices & rely on public transport. But are local town centres and suburbs doing well instead?

1⃣ Manchester city centre experienced the largest fall in footfall 🐝

It was the first to experience a sharp drop in activity and the recovery is slower than in other local centres.
2⃣ By the end of August, Manchester had recovered only 49 per cent of its activity. This is half the levels seen in Wigan.
3⃣ Not all local centres have recovered equally. Although commentators have suggested local high streets would receive a WFH boost, the data for Greater Manchester does not back up this claim.
4⃣ However, Manchester city centre has benefited from the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

We compared footfall on Monday to Wednesday evenings before and after the voucher scheme was introduced.

So, does this mean a brighter future for local #highstreets? Not necessarily.

Though all these local centres have recovered faster than the centre of Manchester, only Wigan has fully recovered its pre-lockdown levels. Altrincham and Stockport are not yet close.
