The A-wing had been a quick escape. A place to hide and think. The smell and feel of mother’s ship served as a last sanctuary of her memory. A final place where Poe could commune with a woman who should still be around, still be at home.

She should still be at home when he’d storm in late, waiting with a hot cup of Tarine tea, a comforting smile on her face.

“Do we need to talk, Poe?” she’d ask in those imaginary moments, in those scenes that still felt all too real. Hurt all too much.

Shara Bey of the Rebellion. Hero of the Battle of Endor. Friend to Princess Leia Organa and Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker.
Mother.
She was a hero to him. A light he was always drawn to, a source he drew strength from.
And she was gone.

“Wake up,” someone said.
Poe didn’t want to be alive.
But the ache he felt wasn’t physical – it was for his mother’s ship, the ship he’d learned to fly in with her. Like Shara Bey, it was gone. Like Shara Bey, it had been shot down from the sky.

"Poe, my father would’ve given up on me the second or third time I pulled a stunt like this. Hear you made it to SEVEN or EIGHT, according to your record.” Poe shook off the officer’s grip and limped past the desk, past Kes Dameron.

Naughty Poe!

“Poe, do you even realize what it took? For me to get you out again? This isn’t the first time, they were ready to just leave you on ice. If it hadn’t been for your —”
"My mother?” Poe said angry. “Can you say it, Dad? Can you say her name now?!

“I want to see what’s out there. I want to do something that matters. I want to fly and explore, like –”
“Like Shara,” L’ulo said. “I know, kid. I know.”
“Why doesn’t Dad get that, L’ulo?”
“You’re all he has.”
“And he’s all I have.” Poe said.

L’ulo knew Poe had the markings of a great pilot. All the elements were there. The confidence. The willpower. The fearless nature. The ability to absorb complicated technical ideas and transform them into action. Poe had it all. He just wanted a chance.

"You know what my mom would do. So does Kes. She was a thrill seeker. A hero. She took risks and she fought hard. She’s part of me. You see that, L’ulo. And that terrifies you, doesn’t it?”
The nod L’ulo gave in response was enough for Poe.

Fontis waved a hand at Poe dismissively. “You’re a sprout. I don’t serve sprouts.”
Poe slammed a hand on the bar— more a joke than a show of anger. “C’mon, Fontis, cut me a break. I’ve had a rough day.”

Teenager Poe wanted adult drinks😏🍸

Fontis gave Poe a glass of Jawa juice. “Here you go. The worst this’ll do is make you want to dance, which I think is worth risking my license.”
Poe thanked the barkeep, tossing a few credits onto the counter.

Dancing Poe is worth the risk🕺

Poe loved his father and wanted there to be some kind of understanding between them. Why couldn’t his father just let him find his own path?

Poe was young. Adventure was in his blood. How could Kes – who’d married a Rebellion pilot and and been a Pathfinder – expect any less?
Poe saw her out of the corner of his eye – a lithe figure swaying to the music. She was about Poe’s age, her long, wavy brown hair and sharp features giving her an almost feline quality, like a predator able to perch on a tree for days.
