glad they did this research now, when newsrooms have moved on from initial spasm of #BLM & many won’t be making proper changes. We need to be better all the time. Constantly vigilant. It’s not a moment, it’s longterm shift to more relevance to audiences, for industry survival https://twitter.com/nadine_writes/status/1306366957529202694
If you want more people to defend our industry, make them see it as relevant to their lives. And yes, I mean “we”, I’m an editor, I need to be better and do better and keep this stuff at the top of my agenda for the rest of my working life.
Keep listening, keep hiring, keep promoting, supporting, learning. Current industry conditions are far from ideal - it’s hard to hire and promote when budgets are so squeezed - but we can make choices within the limits we have, about commissioning, imagery etc
I let down a young Black journo I hired at one point because I didn’t fully understand how our industry makes people feel excluded. It’s not enough to diversify a workplace by hiring alone, you need to change the culture too. We have to learn from our mistakes and keep learning
Urgh, I hate how preachy I sound. But it’s so depressing that we are in the state we are in, and we all need to take it seriously and keep it high up the agenda of all our newsrooms.
Wait, one more point! Diversity of journos is SO valuable - people bring fresh perspectives, ways into new pockets of audiences, richness of content. It’s not about *helping* people, or worthiness, it’s about making your outlet better, more successful, more likely to survive
I sometimes forget to say that because it’s so bloody obvious, but what’s clear from research like that - and from conversations in newsroom across the land - is that it isn’t anywhere near obvious enough to editors
