Being inspired by @cjubarrington @TimeMachineHQ & @MyrnaLoyLove I will be doing a thread for Hispanic Heritage Month about Hispanic & Latin American people in the entertainment industry- specifically in Hollywood & Broadway. Posts might be from different eras; but will primarily
...focus on Hollywood's early decades. Over the coming days there will be posts about persons in front of and behind the camera. Whether a person was on stage or screen... there was an impact on arts and culture that exists to the present day! Above all... please enjoy!
First Day. Katy Jurado (1924-2002). Born Maria Jurado Garcia in Mexico; she was the first Latina to win a Golden Globe (for High Noon in 1952) & the first nominated for an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress for Broken Lance in 1954).
Second Day. Myrtle Gonzalez (1891-1918) was a Mexican-American actress who appeared in nearly eighty films during the Silent Film Era. She had a beautiful voice and was a talented soprano singer. Sadly, she died at a young age (27 years) of flu during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.
Third Day. Damaso Perez Prado (1916-1989) was born in Cuba; but late in life became a Mexican citizen. He was a composer, musician and band leader who was very influential in popularizing mambo music outside of Latin America. He toured and appeared in films all over the world.
Fourth Day. Jose Ferrer (1912-1992), Puerto Rican actor and a Tony & Oscar winner; is shown here with then fiance (and later wife) Rosemary Clooney (1928-2002) arriving at the International Theater in New York City for the 25th Academy Awards. The Oscars held on March 19th, 1953.
Fifth Day. Jose Quintero (1924-1999) was a Panamanian theatrical director, producer & theater founder. He was dedicated to putting on stage the works of Eugene O'Neill. He put on plays from the 1950s through the 1980s. He won a Tony in 1974. His domestic partner was Nick Tsacrios
Sixth Day. Roman Novarro (1899-1968) was a Mexican-American actor of stage, screen and television. He is best known for his film roles during Hollywood's Silent Film Era. His family moved to the United States in 1913 to escape the Mexican Revolution.
Seventh Day. Hispanics / Latins of Hollywood of Yesteryear continues... Olga San Juan (1927-2009) was a New York City born Puerto Rican dancer & actress known for her comedic roles. She also appeared on Broadway. She was an Oscar nominee in 1948. Her nickname was "Beauty Siren."
Eighth Day. Hispanics / Latins in early Hollywood. Antonio Moreno (1887-1967) was a Spanish-American actor and director who began his career during the Silent Movie Era. Co-stars included Pola Negri and Greta Garbo. By the 1930s he began appearing in and directing Mexican films.
Ninth Day. Modern images for today! Hispanics on Broadway! Lin-Manuel Miranda (Puerto Rican) is an actor, composer, producer & playwright! He has a won a Pulitzer, Emmy and multiple Grammy and Tony awards! He is best known for creating the musicals In The Heights & Hamilton!
Tenth Day. Latin American Stars of Hollywood & Broadway! Carmen Miranda (1909-1955), star of Brazilian radio & film; before coming to the USA where she appeared in American movies & television, starred on Broadway and had popular nightclub acts. She was the "Brazilian Bombshell."
Eleventh Day. Hispanics In Hollywood! A winner of the Golden Globe Cecile B. deMille Award and of two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Viva Zapata & Lust For Life); immensely talented and ruggedly handsome Mexican-American Anthony Quinn (1915-2001) had a decades long career.
Twelfth Day. Hispanics In Hollywood! Mona Rico (1907-1994). Mexico City born actress who came to Hollywood in her teens and became a U.S. citizen at 23. She starred in films alongside John Barrymore, Humphrey Bogart & Mae West. She survived an airplane crash in 1932.
Thirteenth Day. Hispanics in Hollywood! William Gaxton (1893-1963) was born Arturo Antonio Gaxiola to Spanish-American parents in San Francisco. He was a Naval veteran of World War One. The handsome actor was a star of radio, film and Broadway.
Fourteenth Day. Hispanic Entertainers! Ruth Fernandez (1919-2012) was an Afro-Puerto Rican singer who began singing in local radio stations & nightclubs before landing a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1941. During WWII & The Korean War she entertained Latino troops.
Fourteenth Day. Hispanic Entertainers! Ruth Fernandez (1919-2012) PART II. Ms. Fernandez would get a contract with CBS Radio, perform in TV specials, record albums & tour the world. She confronted racial barriers & in later years served in the Puerto Rican territorial Senate.
Fifteenth Day. Hispanic Hollywood! Pedro Armendariz (1912-1963) was a Mexican actor whose career spanned the "Mexican Cinema Golden Era" and the "Golden Age of Hollywood." He was given the nickname "The Clark Gable of Mexico." He was very talented and extremely handsome.
Sixteenth Day. Hispanic Hollywood! Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) was born to an African-American father and an American Latina. His diverse career as a dancer, singer and actor spanned vaudeville, Broadway, film, television, nightclub acts and the recording industry.
Seventeenth Day. Hispanics In The Entertainment Industry! Armida Vendrell (1911-1989) was born in Mexico; the daughter of a famous stage magician. After moving to the USA, she appeared in vaudeville & theatrical productions. She began making films in 1929 & continued until 1951.
Eighteenth Day. Hispanic Hollywood! Raquel Welch is a Bolivian-American actress of stage and screen (both television and film). She has been a singer, USO entertainer and performer in a successful Las Vegas nightclub act. At any age she is immensely talented and a stunning beauty
Nineteenth Day. Hispanics On Broadway! Chita Rivera (Puerto Rican) is a singer, dancer & actress of screen & stage. She is known for roles in Broadway musicals & has won the Tony 3 times. She received The Presidential Medal Of Freedom in 2009. As of this post She is 87 yrs young.
Twentieth Day. Hispanic Hollywood. Miriam Colon (1936-2017) was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. She was a director/ founder of a theater company. She appeared on Broadway and had a long and distinguished career. When not acting she acquired a vast collection of art & film memorabilia
Twenty First Day. Hispanic Hollywood. Don Alvarado (1904-1967) was born in Albuquerque. This very handsome and muscular Mexican-American had a career in the movies that included acting, directing & production management. He got his acting start with roles in silent films.
Twenty Second Day. Hispanics In Hollywood's Golden Age. Joy Page (1924-2008). Joy was of Mexican/Russian Jewish heritage. Her Mexican-American father was silent film star Don Alvarado. Her stepfather was studio mogul Jack Warner. She was "Annina" in the 1942 film Casablanca.
Twenty Third Day. Hispanics In The Entertainment Industry continues... Cheo Feliciano (Afro-Puerto Rican) was a handsome and talented musician. He was a music genius & awarded a Latin Grammy in 2008. He was an icon in salsa music. He died in a 2014 car crash at age 78 years old.
Twenty Fourth Day. Hispanic Entertainers! Armando Calvo (1919-1996) was born to a Spanish father (an actor) and a Puerto Rican mother in Puerto Rico. He made films in Mexico, Spain & Italy. Very handsome, he acted in comedies, musicals, horror, dramas and a 1967 superhero film.
Twenty Fifth Day. Hispanic Entertainers. Sophisticated, suave, talented and handsome...Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban (1920-2009) was an Emmy winner (1978) and was given the Life Time Achievement Award by the Screen Actors Guild (1993). He acted on stage & in television and film
Twenty Sixth Day. Hispanic Entertainers. Gilbert Roland (1904-1994) was a Mexican actor whose career began in silent films. His film and television career lasted for decades. Twice he was a Golden Globe nominee. He advocated for better treatment of Hispanics in Hollywood.
Twenty Seventh Day. Hispanic Entertainers. Beatriz Michelena (1890-1942) was a Venezuelan-American actress born in New York City. She starred in many silent films and had a career on stage and as a singer. She founded her own production company to make films.
