The first victim of the leopard was from Benji village in 1918. For the next 8 years, village folk and townspeople alike were terrified of venturing alone at night on the road between the shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath, for it passed through the leopard's territory.

Cunning and ferocious, the leopard would break down doors, leap through windows, claw through the mud walls of huts and drag occupants out before devouring them. According to official records, the leopard killed over 125 people.The unofficial toll is probably higher.

Troops were pressed into service to hunt down the animal, which had assumed fearsome mythic qualities among the simple hillfolk. Mechanical traps failed, poison had no effect. The man-eater became the topic of newspaper articles around the world.
