There is no good reason to keep the current Brazilian Constitution if the only argument against writing a new one is that the people and their representatives cannot be trusted to act wisely in a Constituent Assembly.
I take the same position for the United States Constitution.

Distrust of the people is a profoundly elitist justification for keeping the current constitution.

The public debate could be reoriented to better effect. It is more persuasive to defend the values of the Brazilian Constitution and its noble ambition to create a social state than to breed fear about the people themselves.
