Given all of the ongoing change & uncertainty in schools, I’m seeing a big push toward standardization in grading, curriculum, pacing, etc.

Much of this standardization is being framed for “equity,” and MY TIRED SELF IS NOT HAVING THAT.

Gotta call this one out, and in. 1/
Imposing standardized curricula, written by mostly white educators at for profit companies who spend a hot minute in the classroom;

Prioritizing tight pacing OVER flexibility & responsiveness to our mostly BIPOC students;

= CONTROL

Rooted in distrust of Teachers;

2/
= CONTROL

Rooted in a deep failure to recognize the brilliance of our students;

Deprived of hope.

3/
Without centering our students and the trauma they may very well bring in person on Monday, we fall victim to centering the ease of those in power.

We can’t break the cycle of inequity without breaking free of, and dismantling, control.

4/
Reminder from @DrIbram: “Standardized tests have become the most effective racist weapon ever devised to objectively degrade Black minds and legally exclude their bodies.”

Let’s consult our most marginalized Ss.

Might they see standardization as relevant? As equitable?

5/
It’s not every day that our schools rewrite playbooks.

I’m running on an empty tank, but one thing I have is hope.

I didn’t become a teacher to teach compliance. I became a teacher to teach Ss to challenge compliance when it harms them.

I gotta practice what I preach.
