I think imma start a thread of bands that I feel should be much larger but get overlooked by the majority of the Metal scene.
First up, a band that has quickly become probably my favorite Metal band ever, their mix of Black, Doom, and Gothic Metal is just so depressive and melancholy. RIP to David Gold. Gone much too soon. https://open.spotify.com/track/1HB5Vh4Vfe0O66A30uWbbL?si=hIDmhecKQBW66FderPyiTw
Second, a black metal band who rose from the ashes of WoY falling apart, lead by Joel Violette (former Woods guitarist) this band carries on the Atmospheric Black elements and added folk parts, creating something truly special. https://open.spotify.com/track/2Mm6qwRaxexISpMnT67tCY?si=eRuQkpjGT3GKtyPQvBpU0g
If you like either of the two bands I’ve already mentioned, Canada’s Altars of Grief will be right up your alley. Very depressing, brooding, thunderous Doom, They disbanded earlier this year after giving us a split with Nachtterror and two full lengths. https://open.spotify.com/track/4WY4O6NenoavgStthRzkVo?si=C9_2LrldTKaz3MTykzr1eg
Next up we have Minnesota’s Amiensus. A fantastic blend of Black, Doom, Death and Progressive Metal, owing equal debt to Agalloch as they are to acts like Dream Theater. They have a new record releasing later this year. https://open.spotify.com/track/7bywwjrwyKIoZS5IKbrc5A?si=YdV637K1SH6Gd4cR7GLgvw
And to follow, a side project of Amiensus, Adora Vivos is essentially a tribute to Woods of Ypres (not the trend I wanted to go for but it’s what this thread is so far) even going as far as to take their name from the 5th track on the final Woods release https://open.spotify.com/track/3PCWotRrmSPS3iFQQeE4gh?si=S9sTUhSyRN6g0vJwkzvqjg
Next up we have Aoratos, side project of Naas Alcameth (of Akhlys and Nightbringer). Stylistically similar to early Leviathan. Dreadful and haunting, an all encompassing assault on your senses. The musical equivalent of a horror movie. https://open.spotify.com/track/2H3feNyjjDvfBBrkLouh4G?si=w2Hctlu_R9eRGpp1_hVtVA
Gonna toss Begerith on the list as well. Basically what would happen if Behemoth didn’t sell out and become cringe as shit. This is the Satanist but actually good. https://open.spotify.com/track/3ZrJEmzi8Ho6QyZEcoAOfE?si=e9kjJ7wJS1iumsfcBb0QKQ
Austria’s Ellende are a massively underrated band when it comes to Blackgaze/DSBM. If you dig stuff like Ghost Bath, Lascar or An Autumn For Crippled Children I see no reason why this band wouldn’t be something you’d also like. https://open.spotify.com/track/4Ih0yXEO41lQVp53F2wijv?si=6H-rjp3yQeawGckiZXWoKg
