I think Americans might be learning that maybe you have to show up in local politics and get involved in school boards etc.

If you won’t do it, then who will?*

Nobody’s coming. It’s up to us.

* [footnote in next tweet]
* a huge problem here is that being involved in local politics is uncompensated labor that everyone benefits from, so you only have a certain pool of people *able*, never mind willing, to put the time and effort in. This is a societal problem!
You want to show up and make sure your school district isn’t minimizing or erasing the Holocaust? You need to put in the time. But you’re already working two jobs? “That’s your problem,” says society.

This isn’t working.
This is *just* the school district board example. If you want to be involved in education, you’ve got to make a choice - do you know how much PTAs do and spend time on *just for fundraising* so schools have the bare minimum? So teachers have *boxes of tissues*?
So fine, you need to be on a PTA to help *fundraise* because apparently we don’t want to *pay* for schools, and then even if you are, you still need to make sure there’s actually competent people on the board at the district level?
It’s fucking despairing.
Oh and then layer on all the gerrymandering on top of that.
It’s enough to make you want to go: well, you want to tear this country down? Fine, I’ll dump all your tea in the fucking harbor and start my own.

OH WAIT.
Don’t go to mars, we’ll just fuck that up, because too many of us are always running away from fixing our own shit.
Hi I’m having a really hard fucking time because we can’t go outside, Zoom school is shit, I’ve spent maybe 3 minutes outside total in the last 6 days and a civil war is probably going to happen in about 60 days.
meanwhile I have to *concentrate on my work* and yeah you can guess how that's going
nah gonna have a cry instead ffs
shout out to anyone else being asked to produce a 6 month gantt chart right now, when the best guess is you "might" be able to go outside in non-hazardous air on friday, "maybe"
