It's always about virtue signaling even when it isn't. https://twitter.com/davidfrum/status/1304752915303759872
When there are no more objective standards to serve as the foundation of civilizations, all its hierophants can do is vaunt the excellence of their subjective opinions.
A lot of moral outrage isn't due to the violation of some sacred principle but failure to obey the edicts of self-appointed authorities. That's why abortion is virtuous and failing to call a bearded man a woman is cause for ostracism.
What makes contemporary moral indignation so forceful isn't the 'morality' but the 'indignation'. Morality there is none, having long been abolished, but there is an abundance of anger. "You make me feel unsafe", "that's a microagression", "your American flag is hurtful".
The clenched look Frum finds so offensive is really characteristic of the grim and determined, who walk around all day looking chronically constipated, angry at everything, forever correcting everyone.
