Watching Girlfriends again now that I'm old enough to have experienced a lot of the situations, makes me realize how horrible they each could be.

Joan was a controlling, overbearing and often desperate stage five clinger. And while I relate so much with her character on plenty (the OCD especially), some of her actions were so exaggerated that it made it far too easy to be annoyed with her.

Toni was a narcissistic, selfish asshole of a person. Who had very little redeeming qualities. She was consistently a terrible friend & partner to basically everyone on the show. And only adjusted her behavior when it suited her. But she was funny. I'll give her that.

Lynn was a complete LEECH. Who was so ungrateful & sometimes disrespectful to the hands that fed her. Her personality was a lot more chill than the others, but that needy & lazy mentality was unappealing. And it hits different now as an adult who understands the cost of living.

And Maya spent so much time preaching and teaching to the other women that she often ignored her own shit. She didn't mind being super judgey, but expected her selfish ways to be overlooked. I could honestly tolerate her more than the others, but she had some moments too.

But baaaaaaby, I still love this show for all the parts of them that portrayed what it was like being a flawed human in friendship. No matter how messy. And the fabulous parts of being BLACK WOMEN in friendship. Girlfriends is forever a classic.

But I also thank God my girlfriends never irked my nerves the way these ladies did each other. Because some of the shit they did? Unforgivable.
