What's DEMOCRATIC BUDGETING? It's where people decide together how to spend part of a city's budget.

We're creating a community-led participation process that deepens democracy, strengthens communities, & makes public budgets more accessible, equitable & effective. /thread https://twitter.com/KCEquityNow/status/1304869901887246338
What are a few values that guide this community-led process?

(1) DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION. We believe in democracy by and for the people, where community members are able to directly participate in making the decisions over resources that affect their lives.
(2) EQUITY. We focus on including and centering those who face the greatest barriers to participation. We aim to redistribute power and resources to where they are needed most and reduce disparities between groups.
(3) COMMUNITY. Our communities hold the expertise & brilliance needed to build a better world for all. The community-led process brings people together to learn from each other and achieve the shared goals of public safety for all Seattle residents.
(4) TRANSPARENCY. We believe in sharing information clearly, making decisions openly, and communicating equitably. We will reduce participation barriers, increase access to info, make informed decisions & prioritize accountability.
We've all watched the Seattle police publicly assault, maim, choke, beat, murder & terrorize Seattle residents.

Despite this, @cityofseattle officials have unilaterally poured over $409 million annually into failed racist policing.

We're not about that. You shouldn't be either

The $100 million that @MayorJenny pledged to the Black community must be distributed through a community-led participatory budgeting process.
