Y'all, I have a million other things that are more important to do than sit down and read Kanye West's contract, which he signed as an informed millionaire who could afford a whole building of lawyers.

If it's a bad deal, he shouldn't have signed it bc he sure didn't need to.
As I said on Twitter pretty recently, I believe, the only thing you're learning from an artist who's just now becoming upset over not owning their masters is they have never paid attention to a Prince interview.

Learn history or don't but this is what happens if you don't.
Speaking on my own business, I will die before I sell 1% ownership of Cocaine & Rhinestones under any terms, for any price. Ask any network or corporation who's tried to buy it if I even waited for them to give a dollar amount before I said no.
Exclusive licensing deals (similar to the big stories in podcasting right now) were sometimes offered as a followup. These may work for some musicians/artists/projects but my goals are to spread information as far as possible, not put it behind any kind of wall. So, also a no.
Having spent my entire life around older artists and heard about all the bad deals they've signed, I have a literal physical and spiritual inability to compromise in this area. It has not made things easy on me but it was never going to be easy, was it?
There's nothing stopping you and your friends from getting together to pick and grin on the weekends. As soon as you sign a contract, you're in the fucking game. Learn the rules. Read the history. Know what you're willing to give up before you walk in the door.
