Hey, I know a lot of us are struggling to find meaning and purpose in our work right now. This interview of pianist @sdinnerstein by @NPRKelly yesterday brought me some peace. I send this summary out to all the stressed-out grad students out there who need a lift.
During the pandemic, @sdinnerstein stopped playing. She said "Well, I struggled with it. I tried to play. I tried to practice... But I felt really distanced from music... And I didn& #39;t feel creative. I just felt frozen. And it seemed meaningless to me to be playing the piano."
Throughout the pandemic @sdinnerstein said "I would be lucky if I practiced for an hour a day. And normally, I practice for about six hours a day."
but then @sdinnerstein made a recording of herself playing Schubert& #39;s last composition "Sonata In B-Flat".
and @sdinnerstein said, "I was really surprised because my playing during those months of not playing seemed to have grown tremendously ..."
@sdinnerstein concluded "... I think that this may be my best recording so far. ... I thought that I was all dried out and doing nothing. And it turns out that something was happening to me when I wasn& #39;t playing. And I guess that& #39;s a good lesson to learn."
thank you @sdinnerstein and @NPRKelly for the wisdom and insight. I just mentally replaced & #39;practicing piano& #39; with & #39;writing papers& #39; and it helped me tremendously.
