Until every child has an adequate device and reliable internet, attendance and grades are really markers of privilege during this time. We are not all in the same boat right now. My kids have working devices that we already had in the home and reliable internet. [thread] https://twitter.com/noticiashouston/status/1305705743291744256">https://twitter.com/noticiash...
We have a steady income. Virtual learning has had its ups and downs, but at the end of each day I recognize and am saddened to realize that the ups we’ve had are largely due to our access to these means. It should not be this way.
I have inquired why so many children in my area are still waiting on devices and shared my concerns about this. I noticed the disparities right away & my 3rd grades is well aware that some of his classmates have to borrow their parent’s phones and this saddens him as well.
District has set up learning centers, but the little girl in the segment has breathing issues & rightly so, mom wants her home in a safer environment. If thousands of students continue having to learn without devices, expectations on students & families need to to be adjusted.
I should clarify that I know technology access won’t solve all issues and inequities. But focusing on what’s been so salient/obvious for us as a family these first weeks of virtual school.
