However I do think McElwee thinks he's far more important than he really is. Data for Progress is really on the periphery of the left wing movement.
McElwee says leftists should take popular stances but as @SpecialPuppy1 points out, he advised candidates to take a number of unpopular positions. Kirsten Gillibrand embraced abolishing ICE and then backed it away from it after it became clear it's unpopular.
McElwee makes a lot of good points that leftists rally around fringe candidates instead of the ones who win.
We've seen this play out in the Senate this year where left wing groups endorsed fringe candidates instead of the frontrunners. Groups like Brand New Congress endorsed Betsy Sweet over Sara Gideon.
