One-Off #9 - Talking about Asura's Wrath.
Hilde's hands are now more workable. Added a bit of 'shine' to Sabs' eyes. IMPROVEMENT!
Also welcome to the thread where I talk about one of my favorite games (Asura's Wrath) for a while.

*Sips tea* Oh, shit, someone's actually reading this. OKAY.
So Asura's Wrath. Asura is betrayed and killed by his fellow Deities because his daughter is the world's best Buffer and they want her power.
So naturally Asura comes back and tears across the world to find his daughter.
The story, visuals and artwork are absolutely phenomenal (and the reason why I love the game so much), but the game wasn't very well received back in the day for THREE reasons.
1. The gameplay was very simple and bland. Imagine a 'Devil May Cry' style of play that's broken down to its bare bones. You beat up enemies (most of which can barely harm you) until you build up enough Wrath, a QTE Cutscene ensues and takes you to the next area. That's it...
Maybe Capcom could've resolved this by taking more liberties from Devil May Cry and adding a linear-ish world for you to traverse and abilities to unlock along the way. Instead we have this cycle of:
Fight > QTE Cutscene > New Fight
Which isn't enough to keep the player engaged.
2. The QTEs. Except I actually saw the QTEs as a positive this time around, so...yah. There's been a lot of criticism regarding QTEs and interactive cutscenes in the video game industry, but I think Asura's Wrath pulls it off well given the amount of cutscenes it actually has.
Asura's Wrath has roughly five hours worth of cutscenes in total, which takes up the majority of a full playthrough of the game. If the game DIDN'T let you interact with those cutscenes, you wouldn't be playing a game. You'd be watching a movie.
Players didn't like the QTEs because 9/10 times you weren't punished for FAILING them, besides knocking points/grades off of your final score. If there were more rewards/consequences for succeeding/failing, the QTE mechanic would've been close to perfect.
3. The True Ending is DLC and 8 years on you still have to pay for it...
The non-DLC ending of Asura's Wrath ended with a whimper, so much so that I personally refuse to see it as an ending at all. Back in 2012 you'd be paying full price for what feels like an unfinished game.
Oh and also coughing up some extra gold for the remaining half-hour / hour of the game, which you still have to do, at the same price, over eight years on from its release.
Guys, I love this game I swear! I'm just upset that Capcom didn't love it when making it like I do when playing it. The story, the music, the environments, the character designs, the concept art! And I really, REALLY like how it feels when Asura beats people up!
