Dear Twitter,
Thank you all for tagging me. Yes, I am aware there is a 2 hr documentary about Nelson tonight on Channel 5. No, I do not expect much because it's Channel 5 and they have previous for rubbish.
Yours aye,
KJ x

Well @DrSamWillis is in it so at least I know I'll trust one person's judgement

We're skipping straight to Cape St Vincent are we... Because he did nothing before 1797?
Sure, sure...
Sure, sure...
Okay, we have Andrew too. Slightly more relieved.
Hi, Nelson didn't lose all of the sight in his right eye. He could still distinguish between light and dark to know people were there.
Another mention of Jervis without any talk of how he actually greatly influences Nelson and his later leadership style...?
I do like that they've picked up on Nelson: The PR Machine though

Here we go...
It's coming...
My favourite naval battle.

I hope they just let Willis and Lambert take over the rest of the documentary here.
They seem to have done this at least for the Nile. Thank christ

I need to start building my @WarlordGames L'Orient. This has reminded me

Nelson's coffin in later life of course was made from the mast of L'Orient, in what was one final epic mic drop.
CHELENGK KLAXON
We are all Nelson crazy

I don't know why I hoped for more from this than just talking about events that get mentioned in *literally every other* documentary, but there we are...

Will we get a mention of "the butcher of Naples" I wonder...

The book on Emma Hamilton by @KateWilliamsme is one of my favourites. Absolutely well worth picking up if you have any interest. She was an incredible woman.
That's a no on Nelson's awful actions in Naples... They weren't just ordered home.
If you want a book on Nelson's (frankly quite appalling) behaviour in Naples then Nelson at Naples by Jonathan North is a must read.

Infact, if you have any interest in history, you should read it.
He earned the nickname "the butcher of Naples" for good reason.
@WManthorp has posted some great tweets on all things Naples previously also, whilst I'm on a tangent.

Which has also reminded me I have about 200 photos of letters written by Nelson whilst he was in Naples from the USNA I need to do something with
Too much naval history, not enough hours in a day.

We're just ignoring the Battle of Copenhagen too?
Ffs.

This documentary should be renamed
Nelson: Britain's Great Naval Hero but only if you want to hear about 3 battles, an affair and everything else you've seen in every other naval history documentary, which has ever mentioned Nelson.

Can we just have two hours of Andrew Lambert next time?

"A warning for description of maritime combat injuries"
Since when was this a thing?
They'd hate the real descriptions...

If you want to actually learn about Horatio Nelson, without skipping almost all of his life, then I would 100% recommend The Pursuit of Victory by Roger Knight or Nelson by Andrew Lambert.
For much more in-depth Nelsoning then the volumes by John Sugden are absolutely superb.

I just uttered the words "oh fuck off" if you wondered how I'm finding this documentary.
"Perhaps he even said, 'kiss Emma, Hardy'..."
There are multiple sources which state Nelson said, "kiss me Hardy"
Multiple. Ffs

Can we have a documentary on Emma Hamilton now, please?
"this is why we still see Nelson as a staggeringly interesting figure"
but we're going to ignore some of the most interesting aspects of his life entirely.

Two hours of regurgitated Nelson history. I don't like to criticise generally, as I know people do work hard, but they had two hours and it could have been *so* much better.
Anyway, here endeth my rage.
If you know nothing about Nelson it's a reasonably well balanced (though missing a lot) documentary which covers most of the basics.
