having a pretty big class rage day and also it’s the one year anniversary of the start of the UAW strike at GM! doing solidarity support for this strike changed my life and made me a better organizer. bittersweet ending with the contract but that’s typical for unionists!
me and @craftyandangry drove up on the first night and the workers were like ?? who are you and why are you here? the local in langhorne is really small, probably around 100 workers. they had never had rallies or demos or done much with other unions.
together claire & i built a strike support network with socialists and trade unionists coming up every single day, bringing food, firewood, & company. as the strike continued on, we collected donations for groceries & had weekly grocery pickups for the strikers & their families.
we built a ton of trust and love. some of these strikers became my friends, and we're still in touch. even though there are many political differences and disagreements, they were all grateful for the support of @PhillyDSA.
i learned SO much doing this, and i feel ready and excited to bring these new skills to other strikes in philly! i hope to write some of this stuff up (like strike support in a box) so other DSA members and chapters can throw down in the most helpful ways possible
