It’s amusing but tragic to watch people analyze historical events as though the people alive at the time had the internet and a modern sensibility.
Even as recently as the 1990s, the inability to instantly communicate had a profound effect on the way that interpersonal interactions felt. You couldn’t leave someone with something, then change it on a whim. I worry it’s a form of respect that tech has stripped away.
Or ponder how seemingly simple things might be handled, like getting some cash to eat on a Sunday if you ran out. Or finding a gas station in a strange part of town when you’re low. More thought went into many things that are thoughtless today.
These things affect the way the world looks to people. And that change in thought relative to us today increases as we go back. It’s good to keep in mind. Those people in the past deserve mad respect, sometimes for things that seem simple to us now. And don’t worry...
...people in the future will think we are hopelessly backwards too.
