The real loser in this system is voters, many of whom are tired of both options and long for more choices that are not seen as spoilers or wasted protest votes. Voters want to voice their true preference for a third option without that vote helping to elect someone they dislike.

One solution is ranked-choice voting. Give voters the ability to vote for who they really want and have a backup if that candidate is not viable. It takes the spoiler problem off the table so that minor parties are seen as real options, not just pawns that help or hurt D& #39;s/R& #39;s.
