MY RE:ZERO 2 EPISODE 11 THREAD

Just me rambling about a bunch of nice framing choices, character moments and whatnot.
This Beatrice scene should be watched in parallel with the one in EP32. It confirms what a lot of people caught on from her crying—that she's been lying, & the Gospel that was supposed to be dictating her is revealed to be empty. Every choice was her own. https://twitter.com/Jaereku/status/1296534553612476416
That book is like a symbol of her defense mechanism, of shutting herself off from other people as she even uses it as a weapon to fend off someone reaching out to her.

The one binding her there is no one but herself, and how she feels obligated to uphold her contract.
Of course, that isn't to say Beatrice isn't shackled at all. She made a promise, as a spirit, to someone dear to her, and that someone pulling the strings abandoned her there.

The butterfly motif in her eyes & bow looks familiar, doesn't it? Always pay attention to RZ's designs.
Beatrice is possibly the loneliest existence in the series. Aside from being bound to that library for 400 years, she's a spirit — everyone in her life, every mortal, withers away in time and leaves her behind. This puts in context her attitude towards humans. She envies them.
I like how her words struck a nerve in him; those are the last words someone like Natsuki Subaru would ever want to hear.
That was a pretty good (re-)introduction for Meili. Notice how all the Witchfiends are missing their forehead horns.
I don't know if I mentioned this, but stagnation is one of the main themes this arc, and the characters of Roswaal, Beatrice, Garfiel and Emilia all embody it to an extent.

Beatrice's abilities, like her Door Crossing shutting herself off, also reflecting that is a nice touch.
I guess she finally got her wish from Arc 1... after coming back from the dead.

I also realized just how good Elsa looked in Season 1 when I went for that screenshot. The production quality drop hit her especially hard.
Elsa's particularly ruthless towards him this time around, choosing to play around rather than go for his guts. It's something to think about.

Also that first shot with his eye is pretty great.
Who's really pulling the strings? Roswaal? Echidna? Ryuzu? Someone else? The answer to that question keeps leaning in a different direction with every reveal.
This episode has my top Emilia scenes in all of the season, perhaps even S1.

She's mentally broken and driven to a corner; forced into a state of dependence by Roswaal's schemes. This kind of Emilia, and a savior complex Subaru focused only on her, is Roswaal's desired endgame.
Ever since early in Season 1, Roswaal has been setting up this dependent Emilia & her "savior" Subaru, both of which he could easily manipulate for his own goals. Everyone is a piece in his chessboard, and while Ram and Garfiel are pawns, Subaru is the queen and Emilia the king.
He's nurturing that complex in Subaru, trying to get it to a point where it's his singular point in existence and nothing else matters. Only then will Subaru be a perfect "partner" for him, as his entire existence is focused on a single goal as well.
I like how Subaru himself rejects this "version" of Emilia. This is a far cry from thr true Emilia he knows & loves.
I also liked how this episode turned Re:ZERO's signature eye reflections into something unsettling, especially that special, ghostly shine in Emilia's eyes.
Roswaal never stood up until now, but towers over everyone in the scene when he does, his superiority and control over everyone else emphasized by the low camera angles.
More self-aware than Petelgeuse & a more focused evil than Elsa, but also aware of Subaru's looping to top it off—Roswaal might be the most terrifying figure Subaru came across yet.

I like how he uses an English word he learned from Subaru there as he tries to get him to reset.
This is among my favorite deaths & talks in the series.

Kinda wish they had him drop on his back instead to drive home how he's in perfect control & wholeheartedly accepts his fate.
"—His first kiss tasted of DEATH, cold."

I love how the adaptation conveyed that final line of the chapter with its cold color palette, along with the horror of the scene with its unnerving OST and editing. One of Subaru's desires is fulfilled in the most twisted way imaginable.
Once again, all I have are minor nitpicks. I feel like this episode could've easily surpassed the legendary EP15 given a minute or two more, and with a smoother production, but I'm not dissatisfied.
