just some industry things you should know : a rant
i’ll just be hitting some key points about how horrible and toxic the industry and some things i’ve learned about it over time
as you can probably guess, the music industry is a cruel place, and honestly not a super fun place for artists for many reasons, and how it can be ruthless against them at times.
“images” that they have can be enforced to a certain artist, as sometimes they want an artist to look a certain way, act a certain way, etc.
this can limit an artist from actually doing what they want, and do what their teams want them to do / how to look instead. what one artist may think would be a cool idea probably wouldn’t be accepted by their team at all.
the image they have may also be created to make them more “desirable” to a specific audience over what the actual artist desires.
young talent can be taken for granted by major companies, and force them to work way too hard to the point where they’re overworked. for what may have been someone’s dream when they were younger, they would feel much different about it once they became an actual pop singer.
it is taken advantage of, as once they appear interesting to young audiences and they’re captivated by them, teams will do anything to continue to have the audiences attention, even if the artists are becoming tired of everything they’re doing so they can earn money.
they aren’t as interested in having the artist fully enjoy their careers, but instead gain something from them, the main thing being money.
all business are about making money, one way or another, but the music industry knows that if an artist is losing popularity, they won’t make money, hence they won’t meet their goal, and they need to provide something to their audiences.
ultimately, artists sign away their master rights with a music deal, and are played by someone else. they really can’t do anything with their own music and end up having it owned by the label, possibly forever when signed under a contract.
along with overworking artists so they can make more money, the music industry is extremely homophobic and sexist towards its artists as well.
many artists in the past have been closeted and faced struggles in the industry (along with people in hollywood too). this includes people like kristen stewart, cara delevignge, olly alexander and justin tranter.
these are some of the things that kristen and justin mentioned, showing that they couldn’t just “do what they wanted” and faced pressure and criticism.
this is colton haynes, who’s talking about his experiences as well in an interview
this is a serious issue that actually happens, and when people say “closeting doesn’t happen”, it does, so listen to and understand the stories of those who have come out and have shared things.
taylor swift also spoke out about some of the sexism in the music industry as well, and the double standards there are. for example, she said that writing her songs about past relationships is often criticized, and saying that the relationship would be “inspiration” for a song +
but men never receiving those types of comments. she also mentioned how men in the industry saw her as a “kid” and infantilized her success, along with other female artists, by calling it “cute” that they had some hit songs and they gained some recognition.
just to sum it all up, the industry is very controlling and a terrible place to be in, both in the past and present, a toxic place, and not all artists are “friends with eachother” just because they work the same job.
the music industry sells more lies than actual songs and albums being put out, as what we know publicly is far different than what obviously goes on in the work life of a singer.
