Q: Why did I watch the Docu-Drama "The social Dilemma"?

Q: How did it change my perspective on social media platforms?

Q: Why do I recommend everybody watching it right now?

Q: Why is it so important for you?

A thread🧵
I’ve watched the social dilemma after several recommendations here on twitter by @OdedRechavi and @NeuroSarcastic . It's the second most worrisome thing I came across this yr. I had some understanding regarding the impact of social media on human lives but in no way I imagined
....the scale by which it is manipulating and designed to manipulate human behavior through the attention extraction approach via curated algorithms.

It's troublesome! It isn't right and a complete breach of privacy.... read on to find my feedback on it...
Before that, I'd like to mention that the documentary has impacted me deeply and I, in a personal capacity, set out to watch my interaction with these technology platforms and monitor my own abuse of/and exploitation by these platforms....
The addictive part of social media is the gruesome reality and though these platforms offer a lot of benefits, ”The justifiable usage over addictive dependence is insurmountable and would require rational thinking on our parts (which is often compromised while mindlessly ...
scrolling through social media platforms). It was appalling for me to learn that majority of these psychological manipulations directed to the user are purposely induced by social media/business giants for their commercial interests. The UI is fabricated such that to harness....
the maximum attention span of the dependent users. One phrase which hit me the most was "If a product is free, then you're the product"- The Social Dilemma, 2020 (which is true for all social media platforms). Personally, for me, twitter addiction has been challenging to ...
deal with...We are already dealing with a plethora of challenges (Global pandemic, climate change, a plummeting economy, racism, and polarization to name a few) and this here is something that is beneath all the problems (as mentioned in the documentary itself).
According to the docu-drama, fake news spread 6X faster than the true news which led to many conflicts in the past (egs provided). To sum up, social media platforms contribute to depression in youngsters, fake news advancement, & interferes with the social fabric of society
which has dire consequences if not regulated. Another thing which hit me hard that technology has evolved enormously in the last decade (and the data generated is gigantic) while the evolution of the human mind is not as par to this growth, which raises the question...
that we won't get accustomed to the bombarded information and regular stimulation and increased screen time, this sure does have consequences we might not know of yet.. others in this area of expertise can comment upon on this aspect....
I was shocked, scared, and had goosebumps throughout the entire docu-drama (possibly due to the tense background music and the depiction of the three evil AI interface but majorly due to the content)...*Indeed amazing cinematography*...
Personally, for me, I don't like the idea of my life being controlled and manipulated by these business models. I aspire to be in charge of making my own decisions through conscious thinking rather than by the social media-fed manipulative lies. Also, data privacy is prime and..
in no way should be exploited by these platforms. To think, It's not less than a zombie apocalypse (a mass level technology-driven social media zombie apocalypse) where we are the product and our data is "the cost" by which they make profits...
To look at the brighter side of this, any change happens when we identify a problem, ask questions, & come up with solutions to work on those problems. These are modern age issues and would require both online and offline constructive thought processes. Some solutions offered..
in the docu-drama were reduced usage of social media platforms, deleting apps, cross-checking the source of potential news before sharing, and not clicking on recommended videos on YouTube (always choose what you want to see, don't let their algorithms to know and read your mind)
One thing is for sure, I won't be able to look at the device in my hand the same way as I did before.

I am already tired of jumping through apps to apps and overwhelming myself with a vast amount of data, often drowning and being brainwashed without having much control and...
say about the situations. Lastly, I hate those recommendations I keep getting on different platforms to buy stuff that I might have opened while scrolling. It's disturbing to imagine how closely you're being monitored. I'm going to make a few changes
And if you stayed with me till the end, it means you care about these issues and ready to take the matter in your hands. Do yourself a favor, watch the documentary & recommend it to others. I might have not covered everything in this thread. I'd like to thank you for your time!
