AISH thread.
I’ve met and worked with hundreds of Albertans who receive AISH because they are unable to earn a living and support themselves.
I’d estimate that at least half had invisible disabilities, meaning you couldn’t tell by looking at them.

Many have even mused that being obviously disabled would make life easier.
Their struggles are gut wrenching and the poverty that permeates their lives so incredibly debilitating.
Even AISH is poverty level existence (approx $10 per hour for full-time job)

Here’s one example.
I supported a man in his early 30s. He was an athlete. He sustained a brain injury doing what he loved. He was a newly wed. His wife left her job to help care for him. He had to relearn almost everything.

While I’m certain they were grateful for AISH, they struggled with the poverty that goes along with AISH. They had no choice, no other way to support themselves.
Some would look at him and assume he wasn’t disabled enough.

He didn’t survive beyond a few years post injury for a number of reasons.
He’d lost everything. His life changed in a moment. AISH only covered bare minimum.
This is one example of tens of thousands of Albertans.
