/9 Sony seems prepared to do the full presentation of their PS5 console today on the #PS5Showcase event. We know how it looks, tech specifications, the new controller, some titles... All that is always important when a new console launches, creating excitement
/9 in the general audience. I guess we'll see pricing, release date, more games tonight and devs talking about what a great platform it is. All good, but what matters to many of us is knowing about built-in accessibility.
/9 We know there are people in Sony pushing internally for accessibility, and studios like Naughty Dog creating game-changing titles, or the recent Ghost of Tsushima updates are proof of it. But then it's not a good sign when this aspect of gaming is not mentioned
/9 in these presentations. It makes the company look bad, not the a11ys that work there because it's not their fault. I understand the company wants to make it all about next-gen, the future, unique experiences... but all that means nothing if people don't have tools
/9 to help them use that new technology, live that future and enjoy those experiences. Sony needs to step up and consider that building a new world without a bridge for all people to go there creates exclusion. You are not gonna let down anyone for taking 2 minutes of time
/9 to explain a few features. That little time, just to show you care and give visibility, means a lot to the accessibility community. Then you can have a piece on the blog to go into detail about the accessibility, so people can get the full scope.
/9 It would be good for the console, the brand, the employees who support a11y, and the people who have been loyal PS gamers for generations and are really frustrated and insecure about the new PS5.
/9 Still I hope to be wrong, and that tonight Sony will show something that has us all talking with excitement for days to come and make millions realize they can play on this new platform.
/9 But you know, it's their call. Sony's latest spot is titled “Play Has No Limits”, which is true but only when you make it so. We all love games, we all are on the same boat. You want us to move into the future with you? Then invite us, don’t put limits.
