sometimes I think tristan harris was built in a lab to annoy people who actually have studied anything — literally anything — about science, technology, and society
but *of course* this is the guy that tech journos would designate the conscience of silicon valley. his whole career is a dumbass grift, why should this phase of it be any different?
“no one was upset by this now-considered-harmless technology that is in fact a primary case study for people getting upset about a new technology”
I mean I try to believe in education. Really I do. But if this is the kind of voice who still, in 2020, gets amplified and valorized, what is the point

i& #39;m going to QT this on main because — in addition to being incredibly condescending to & #39;regular people& #39; — it is a bad take from (apparently) an HCI researcher that completely misses the point of why the bicycle example matters https://twitter.com/dev7saxena/status/1306325006918574091">https://twitter.com/dev7saxen...
a bicycle is not a stupid example: it is a good one! because the introduction of bicycles *also* engendered a great deal of anxiety about reordering society, because bicycles *did* reorder society.
some of the concern around bicycles was delusional, and some of it was accurate. for the latter, there were power struggles about how society should transform, and be transformed by, the bicycle. none of it happened in a predetermined or automatic fashion
this is exactly the same position that we find ourselves in today regarding social media / devices / etc: we don& #39;t know, yet, which anxieties are delusional or real, and which fights we should be having for what reasons, and to what ends
this is why TH is worth dunking on: not because he picked a dumb example, but because he picked a great one, and then fumbled it
