The media was central to the name "Sabah" - serving as a platform to popularise the name as well as an outlet for campaigns.

The name preferred by colonial administrators was "British North Borneo".
The use of the name "Sabah", on the other hand, was actively discouraged.

Fuad Stephens (then Donald Stephens) made a big step in establishing the Sabah Times.
He would later become the first Chief Minister of Sabah.
