To those of you who still follow me (goodbye to the 50 who think online abuse of an individual is acceptable because their source was wrong and they don't like their views) you may have seen that I had a brief interaction with Steve Wraith yesterday.

Initially, I responded to this post from Steve and pointed out that he actually went from the takeover being 100% on to 100% off within a couple of days and that playing spot the difference could also be done with his own tweets.

Rather than respond directly, he pointed me in the direction of his show. I have no interest in watching his show and the point remained, regardless of what the show would reveal. Everyone has been wrong but only Luke Edwards is on the receiving end, encouraged by Steve.

Online persecution isn't something I've just decided to stand against. Early this year, Steve himself took a break from Twitter, citing mental health reasons due to online abuse. I wrote an article urging fans to do better. Steve shared it via his Newcastle Legends account.

I was therefore surprised to see him indulging in this very activity towards someone else. I believe he even had someone on his show to talk about mental health recently. I pointed out that actions are more important than talking a good game.

I know he's a busy man so was patient for a response and left it at that for the rest of yesterday. I checked my Twitter this morning to see this

Now this is no loss to me as I never followed him anyway. However, it's disappointing to see that he was unwilling to engage with me at all or consider his actions. Of course, it's his Twitter and he can block who he likes but I wasn't abusive or disrespectful.

I can therefore only assume that discussing his actions towards Luke makes him uncomfortable. I suspect he knows he's in the wrong and blocking me is an easier option than having that conversation. We can't tweet out mental health hashtags and then behave this way online.

Luke doesn't need me to fight his battles and maybe he doesn't even like me doing this but it isn't just about him. We've all read stories of the damage cyber bullying can do to people. That might seem an overreaction but, trust me, it isn't. This is what this behaviour is.

If we don't call out individuals for online persecution, mocking, bullying and abusing then we're not doing enough. Twitter can be a cesspit but that doesn't mean we need to accept it. We can all argue but once it gets personal and vindictive it's gone too far.
Be better.
