tl;dr watch the Social Dilemma on Netflix and get back to me

I sincerely do not understand how anyone can work for Google or Facebook in good conscience right now. I am so, so frustrated by the number of tech spaces I am in where they are seen as the gold standard.
I do not care how much you will grow your skills working there. I do not care how much you are networking and advancing your individual career.
How do you justify working for companies that are eroding democracy at home and abroad? That synthesize massive amounts of data from their users, who don& #39;t understand the ways in which they are being subtly reprogrammed?
Yes, I know financial security is important. I understand if that& #39;s the only job offer you got and you need to, ya know, live. But if you have any choice at all - how do you sleep at night?
I know there is some good and some bad in every system, same goes for tech. But in my mind, this is just So Egregious that I don& #39;t understand how anyone could compromise their ethics like that.
This is spurred by the documentary The Social Dilemma, on Netflix now, btw - I think it should be required for every STEM student to watch.
I keep a list of companies and projects I will refuse to work on for ethical reasons, and I think you should too. Find out where your lines are before they are crossed.

This has let me give myself permission to say no, because past me judged the opportunity unethical.
Feel free to come at me - I genuinely do want to have a conversation about this - but I am more and more terrified about the effects of technology and engineering in society the more I learn (climate change, disinformation, etc), and potentially my role in it.
