Thread: Our real estate agency in Horsham is trying to make us pay an extra three weeks of rent.
Notice to vacate sent by me on August 27, accepted on the same day.
Written confirmation that we would pay rent up until September 23 - 28 days notice.
Received this email today, three weeks after the initial email, after being receiving text messages saying we owe $1200
I responded sending the original letter and the email saying we would not have to pay any break lease fees.
We had spoken to the real estate agency about how we planned to move soon because of my job and they said that we wouldn’t have to pay break lease fees as the house was up for sale/had been sold anyway.
We were due to go to VCAT on September 14 because the owner wanted to evict us because he was selling the house. The hearing didn’t go ahead because we had already vacated the premises.
This is what is says on the tenants union Victoria page. We had verbal and written confirmation that we could vacate early.
We have already booked cleaners and gardeners for next week so if we have to extend our rent then we need to rebook them for later.
The Victorian Tenants Union couldn’t take any more calls today.
The property manager is now claiming the initial email with the wrong date was a “personal error”
Update:
The reply doesn’t even make sense. You can’t tell someone they can break their lease but also tell them they’re responsible for the property including paying until the end of their lease?!
