(1) We do our best for selections processes but they are imperfect. I have tried to make our processes as overt and transparent as possible, both to applicants and selection committee members. But there is limited data to suggest that these processes actually predict (2/n)
success in residency, or success in one's career (if we even know what that means)
(2) The process is competitive. Every candidate who applied has tremendous potential as a gastroenterologist and as a physician. But unfortunately we have a finite number of interview slots. (3/n)

(3) Please don't take it personally if you don't get an interview in Toronto. It is not a mark of failure in any way. All the GI programs across the country are excellent for clinical GI and for GI research training. We're blessed to have a brilliant culture in academic GI (4/n)
at all of our university residency programs in Canada.
