This is a TERRIBLE, horrible, no good; very bad take. https://twitter.com/ascendedkee/status/1305549664696102912
Sigh....

Mariah is NOT the *reason* hip-hop / R&B collabs went mainstream, but she IS one of the best to do them.
Mimi has collabs with ODB, Da Brat, Missy, Jay, Nas, Mobb Deep, Bone, Busta, Mase & Puff, JD, Xscape, Joe, Snoop, Mystikal & P, Luda, Camâron, Jada, LL...

The reason (Iâve said this 80-billion times #OnHere) that Mariah has so many No. 1s was because she always had two versions of her singles: one for pop and one for urban. And the urban one might be a WHOLE OTHER SONG; same title.
And then Tommy used that same formula with JLo.

Also, Vision of Love may be pop, but if you think eârybody Black didnât have Mariahâs self-titled debut and that shit wasnât all over Black radio, Iâm here to correct the record.
Folks are gonna deliberately misunderstand this, but if you KNOW Whitneyâs body of work is important to Black culture, you know Mariahâs is, too. The only difference pound for pound in them both balancing between pop and R&B is Mariahâs white-presenting.

âEmbraced the cultureâ suggests she was an outsider. Ppl assumed that because of optics, but as soon as Mariah was secure enough to speak freely and be herself, we knew. Mariah ainât stumble upon hip hop after she got signed.

So back to this goofy claim for a minute bc I see it too often.
Fantasy was Mariahâs first rap collab. And it a HELLUVA start, but that was 95. The golden era of R&B & rap collabs was WELL underway. Mary, Jodeci and SWV were already bodying it.

Janet & Mike had both done rap features already. Janet had done a couple. Yo, Arsenio and Fox had brought rappers into living more middle America living rooms, but it was still a couple of more years post-âFantasyâ before WHITE pop artists got into collabs in a real way.
And Mariah helped, sure, but Iâd like to direct everyoneâs attention to the fact that rap was starting to make itself at home on the dance and pop charts, period. (The Bad Boy HitMen say hello)
These are just some of the rap songs/artists who were cracking the Hot 100. Itâs significantly more if weâre talking Top 20. Even âSlamâ was No. 2 on the Hot 100. âNuthinâ But a G Thangâ was No. 2 on the Hot 100.

âHip Hop Horayâ was top 10 on the Hot 100 AND Billboard Dance chart. Prior to that, so was OPP, AND MTV changed the whole network theme song to an âOPPâ remix.
Mariah didnât single handedly bring hip-hop to the mainstream masses; please watch some MTV clips from the early â90s

Lambs, just because we donât wanna give Mariah sole credit for bringing rap to mainstream doesnât mean you have to make arguments for her contributions in my mentions. Iâm clear - thatâs where I started with this.
To close, this whole conversation is exactly why I never wanna see Mariah in a Verzuz, because #yall will make it annoying.
